In our final session, we move beyond the outline to discover how light creates the illusion of three-dimensional form. Session Three: Exploring Value is where your sketches stop looking like flat drawings and start feeling like they have weight, atmosphere, and "soul."Value, the lightness or darkness of a color, is the most powerful tool an artist has to create drama and realism. Hedy will guide you through the "math" of light, teaching you how to translate what you see into a rich range of tones.
In this workshop, you’ll learn:
Finding the Form: Master the Sketch Gesture, a refined way to search for your subject’s proportions while preparing for the application of tone.
The Language of Value: Build your "tonal vocabulary" by practicing Continuous and Stepped Value Scales. You’ll learn how to control your pencil to create smooth gradients and distinct shifts in light.
Becoming Volume: Use Cross-Contour Drawing to wrap your lines around the form, instantly turning flat shapes into 3D objects.
Describing Light: Learn the professional technique of creating a Value Map from a photo, identifying the "highlight," "mid-tone," and "core shadow" before you even start shading.
Fun Project: A Ballerina on Toned Paper. Using the mid-tone of the paper to our advantage, we will use dark pencils for shadows and white charcoal (or watercolor pencils) for highlights. The result is a high-contrast, professional-looking study that captures the grace and athleticism of the figure.
Price
$85.00 per student which is fully inclusive of materials.

Age Restrictions: This class is suitable for Ages 10+. Children aged under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult.
Skill Requirements: All skill levels welcome!
A minimum of 4 sign-ups is required for the class to go forward. Invite your friends!
