Sketch & Scribe ~ a practical workshop with Kate Rutter & Krissy Kludt

Join this interactive session to refresh, to renew, and to revel in nature as you explore how word and image can deepen our connection with the natural world.

In this guided workshop, we'll use poetry and sketches to open our senses and to engage with the outdoors in personal and imaginative ways. You'll use simple prompts for poetic writing, practice markmaking and drawing to see more deeply, and explore how combining word and image can amplify your connection to the nuance and beauty of this wild Earth. There will be opportunities to share your work(if desired,) to ask questions, and to have quiet time in nature.

You'll leave with a collection of generative writings and drawings, as well as a more refined piece: a personal Calling Card to nature that records and celebrates your experience.

No experience necessary; all are welcome!

Good to know

• The event takes place outside in the light and air of Point Molate, a nature reserve tucked into the North side of the San Francisco Bay, with wonderful views of the Bay and the Richmond Bridge.
• This small-group experience has only 17 spots available.
• Please bring a water bottle and a chair, blanket, or pad to sit on, and dress appropriately for the weather (bring an umbrella in case it's rainy.)
• We recommend sun protection, bug spray, and closed-toe shoes, no flip-flops.
• Restrooms (accessible Porta potties) are available on site, but no potable water.
• You may wish to bring a snack or lunch and enjoy exploring the area after the session.

Each participant receives two books as part of the registration fee.

• : Krissy's debut poetry collection published by Green Writers Press in March of 2026.
• , a full-color illustrated guide by Kate that introduces 26 plants native to the Bay Area of California, published in December 2025.
• The authors will be available to sign their books, if desired.

Please bring:

• Writing materials (pen or pencil; paper, journal, or sketchbook)
• A chair, blanket, or pad to sit on
• Walking shoes
• Weather-appropriate clothing
• An umbrella if it’s rainy!
• Water and snacks as needed
• Feel free to bring your fave materials for writing/drawing/sketching outdoors.
• Your enthusiasm and energy

Cancellation Policy: Notification up to 7 days prior to event receives a refund less Eventbrite fees (which are not refundable.) If you find you cannot attend less than 7 days before the event, you may transfer your registration to someone else by having them give your name at check-in. In the event that the session is cancelled you will be offered a full refund.

About your Hosts

Poet Krissy Kludt is the founder and executive director of Writing the Wild. Her debut poetry collection, released March 5, 2026 from Green Writers Press. Her work appears in anthologies The Nature of Our Times (Paloma Press 2025), Taking Liberties (Cutthroat 2025), and Stories from the Trail (Wayfarer Books 2024), and in other publications, including Terrain.org, The Wildness We Tend, and Humana Obscura. She lives in the Driftless region of southwestern Wisconsin.

Kate Rutter is an avid nature journaler, urban naturalist, educator, and native plant enthusiast who enlivens nature-human connection through sketching, observation, and curiosity. A lifelong sketcher with an experimental and rambunctious visual practice, Kate’s education work spans online teaching, retreats, corporate & nonprofit trainings and conferences, and nature journal workshops at public & private gardens and nurseries. Kate is author/illustrator of , a board member of the Wild Wonder Foundation, and holds a B.A. in Studio Art from Wellesley College. She lives in xučyun, the ancestral, unceded land of the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone people, also known as the Temescal Creek watershed, also known as Emeryville, CA.
