On February 1, 1960, four N.C. A&T State University freshmen — Ezell Blair Jr. (Jibreel Khazan), Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, and David Richmond — sat down at the whites-only lunch counter of the F.W. Woolworth store in downtown Greensboro and asked to be served. Their quiet courage launched the sit-in movement that spread across the South and helped change America.
Sixty-six years later, we’re inviting the community to tell that story the way Greensboro builders know best: brick by brick.
The challenge: design and build an original LEGO creation — 300 pieces or fewer — inspired by the birth of the sit-in movement. Depict the counter, the Greensboro Four, the community that stood behind them, or what their courage means today. The interpretation is yours.
All ages and skill levels welcome.
How to enter: you have nearly 10 weeks to design and build.
Deliver your build in person to Bricks & Minifigs Greensboro (1570 Highwoods Blvd, Greensboro, NC) any time between Monday, August 10 and 8 p.m. Friday, October 16, 2026, along with a completed official submission form (download below or pick one up in store).
After the show: non-winning builds may be picked up at Bricks & Minifigs Greensboro beginning 30 days after the submission deadline (on or after November 15, 2026). The Grand Prize build will be shipped to the manufacturer, who will finalize the set design based on the winning submission.
The show: entries received by Friday, October 2 will be displayed at Bricksboro, Greensboro’s LEGO fan show, hosted by NCLUG at the Greensboro Science Center, on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
Awards in four categories:
- Grand Prize — the winning design will be produced as Bricks & Minifigs Greensboro’s first custom LEGO set, sold with proceeds benefiting the International Civil Rights Center & Museum — housed in the very Woolworth building where the movement began.
- Jury Prizes — selected by a panel of master LEGO builders from across North Carolina.
- Junior Builder Awards — judged by the same jury panel, reserved for builders aged 15 and younger.
- Audience Award — voted on by the public on social media: every build’s photo is posted to the project’s pages, and likes decide the winner.
