Read for July discussion:
"I Must Betray You", a 2022 historical fiction novel by Ruta Sepetys, set in communist Romania in 1989, following 17-year-old Cristian Florescu, who is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. Forced to choose between betraying his loved ones and undermining the tyrannical regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu, Cristian uses his position to resist, ultimately becoming involved in the revolution against the dictatorship. The book explores themes of fear, suspicion, and the human spirit's resilience, based on real events and interviews with survivors.
