Sip & Learn: "The Psychology of Coercion: Human Trafficking"
About this Event
Human trafficking often begins with someone making you feel seen, loved, and protected. They may offer you the friendship, relationship, financial support, or sense of belonging that you need at that point in your life. The goal is to make you trust them and become attached to them, after which they may begin to take advantage of you. The control happens slowly, which is why the person being trafficked may not immediately recognize what is happening.
This lecture will help us understand what human trafficking is, how common it is, and the warning signs we may be missing. It will also give us the tools to recognize and support a loved one who may be experiencing trafficking without realizing it, and help us understand the answer to the question, “Why didn’t he or she just leave?”
The lecture will be led by R and M, Anti-Human Trafficking Crisis Counsellors and Navigators with Victim Services of Peel. Their names have been redacted for their safety. Both have helped countless survivors recognize that they are being trafficked and supported them through it.
Support will also be available on-site for anyone who may need it.
