What to Expect: Sgraffito, derived from the Italian word for "scratch," is a decorative pottery technique that dates back centuries. It involves carving or scratching through a surface layer to reveal a contrasting color beneath, creating intricate patterns and designs. This time-honored method allows for endless creative expression and unique results.
Participants will start by selecting a pre-formed wine sipper and can customize their piece by adding a sip top or handle. Using underglaze, they will paint their design onto the piece.
Once the underglaze has dried, the sgraffito process begins! Participants will carve into the clay, revealing beautiful designs that combine the natural clay surface and the painted areas. The pieces will then be fired, and Rebekah will apply a clear glaze and fire them again for a stunning, finished look. Completed pieces will be ready for pickup by Apr. 28.
