About this Event
Artist, author, and punk rock luminary Cristy Road Carrera has just released Sink or Burn, an illustrated, autobiographical, dystopian romance about the divine and chaotic intersection of art, love, trauma, and the destruction of the earth. She will be in conversation at Clio's with Eric Drooker, the legendary movement artist and author of Flood and Naked City.
In Sink or Burn, Carolina Tatiana San Lazaro De La Quinta, or CT, tells Cristy Road's personal story of sexual tension, sexual trauma, and falling in love with both the resistance movement and her band's saxophone player. Informed by the experiences of both the author's Cuban diasporic family and the destruction of today's world, Sink or Burn expresses the softness and calm we lose and yearn for during wartime.
Join us for a conversation on art, resistance, and the end of the world.
Eternal rabble rouser Cristy Road Carrera is a first generation Cuban-American artist, writer and musician. Blending anti-fascist principles with survival love stories, Road has spent over twenty-five years testifying to the beauty of the imperfect. Her career began in 1996 with a self-published punk rock fanzine, sparking decades of illustrations for music, literature and social movements. Forging an imprint in queer, feminist countercultures with graphic memoirs, illustrated novels, and punk rock records; Carrera released Next World Tarot in 2019, a tarot card deck that envisions a world based on radical re-definitions of self-love and social justice. Carrera has been fronting punk rock bands since her days of self-publishing fanzines. She currently performs her songs as Choked Up, making records and playing shows with the ancient punk rock ethos of passion before profit.
Eric Drooker, a Manhattan native, first made his mark as a street artist in his teens. Today, his bold drawings and posters are iconic within the global street art movement, and dozens of his paintings have appeared on the covers of The New Yorker. Drooker’s debut book, Flood, earned the prestigious American Book Award. His follow-up, Blood Song, is now in development as a feature film. Naked City, the final installment of his celebrated City Trilogy, completes a body of work that has been translated into multiple languages. His animation for the film HOWL also led to a collaboration with DreamWorks Animation. His art is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Library of Congress. A sought-after speaker, Drooker frequently delivers slide lectures at colleges and universities.
