Our winter, 2025, repertoire will teach us about the voice, vocalisation, musical expression, music history, music theory, and best of all, culture. Each of these composers is considered to be “the best" by their peers, and offer an exciting look into 20th century choral music. We will study and perform the following:
Benjanmin Britten's REJOICE IN THE LAMB (text by the eccentric Christopher Smart.) Mr. Smart is considered to be certifiably insane, but also a genius. Note the picture of NIMROD, the mighty hunter, above. He references this historical figure, as well as, a clever mouse, and Jeoffry, the cat. And don't underestimate Britten's clever setting of these texts for SATB chorus, soloists, and organ.
Randall Thompson's FROSTIANA (text by American poet, Robert Frost.) American stalwart compser, Randall Thompson, is one of the FEW composers the Frost estate allowed to set this poetry. Thompson carefully crafted this set of seven poems by Frost using his idomatic, timeless melodies while utilizing his reconizable and familiar "Americana" harmonies; set for SATB, SSA, and TTB. We can't wait to "Choose something like a star".
John Rutter's A SPRIG OF THYME (13 arrangments of traditional texts from the British Isles.) Rutter brings to life some familiar tunes, such as "The Bold Grenadier", and my personal favorite, "Down By the Sally Gardens”, which invokes nostagia and romance, as well as melancholy all at once. These incredibly singable arrangments are beautilful, but also allow me (Dr. C/Erin) to teach breath, phrase, and tone at the same time.
What are you waiting for? Come and register on Jan. 13, Jan. 27, and Feb. 3 from 6pm - 7pm at TFA, 250 (Choir room on NMU's campus). If you have questions, please contact me (Dr. C/Erin) at [email protected]. Don't know what voice part you sing? NO problem. I am able to help.
Cost is $30 to register and $35 for music (that you keep). Total for 15 2-hour music lessons: $65. A bargain. If you register for MU 112 or MU 112A, you pay only for music.
See you then!
