John S. Webb came to Sweden in 1974, after working and studying in England as a photographer.
He has published some 16 photo books. John’s work evolves around humankind’s relationship to the land and nature. His first book Still Movements was self-published in 1977 and his most
recent Singapore Sand was published last year. It is this book he will have with him to Landskrona.
Singapore Sand is the result of eleven visits to Singapore photographed over a period of 10 years. Singapore is a former British colony and John’s uncle was imprisoned there by the Japanese during WWII while serving with the R.A.F. Singapore today is a very modern, rich, independent, small Asian island state with a very high educational standard and an extreme population density.
Every bit of land counts and an intensive policy of land reclamation from the sea has been ongoing for many years. Singapore has been forbidden by some surrounding countries to import sand and gravel because of the high levels of extraction and development.
Singapore Sand was awarded by Sweden’s Ministry of Culture (Kulturrådet) in 2023 “distributions support” (Distributionsstöd) inorder that the book would be available in all of Sweden’s public
libraries.
John has lived in Lund, Helsingborg, Höganäs and is currently living in Malmö. He worked for many years for the now defunct Aktuell Fotograf magazine, taught at Lund University, at
Fotohögskolan/ Högskolan för Fotografi (now Valand) at Göteborg University and at Malmö Högskola (now University).
