Zebra Katz, born Ojay Morgan in West Palm Beach, Florida, is a Jamaican-American multidisciplinary rapper, producer, songwriter and performing artist. Morgan’s career took off in 2012 when fashion designer Rick Owens featured Zebra Katz's track, “Ima Read” on loop at Paris Fashion Week. The song went viral due to the excitement in the fashion circles, along with a write-up in The New York Times.
The single opened up a path for Morgan to tour widely around Europe, North America, and beyond for the next five years. Throughout their whole career, Morgan has performed in a wide array of venues from underground parties to established music festivals and arts institutions, such as SXSW, Lollapalooza, the New Museum in New York, MoMA PS1, Brooklyn Museum, and Art Basel in Switzerland. Morgan has also performed alongside Gorillaz for their ‘Humanz’ world tour and opened for artists like Lana Del Ray and Die Antwoord.
Morgan’s style of music can best be described as genre-defying and their multidisciplinary career as self-made. Their character Zebra Katz originally surfaced through their thesis project at the Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at the New School. Making music became an extension of Morgan’s interest in theater, culture studies, identity obsession, and the lively New York City underground arts scene around them.
Morgan’s debut album, Less is Moor, was released on March 2020 at the start of the global COVID-19 health crisis, seven years after their debut single and as a culmination of their impressive wealth of experience in defining their craft. Finding inspiration in artists like James Baldwin, Grace Jones, Nina Simone, and Little Richard, the versatile record features several co-producers (Sega Bodega, Tony Quattro) and guest appearances (Shygirl, S Ruston).
