Not every band can carry off Steely Dan. The songs are too sharp, the grooves too exacting and the writing too full of left turns. Simply Dan can, and that is what makes this show such a pleasure.
This eleven-piece band is made up of seasoned musicians who understand that the brilliance of Steely Dan lies in the balance: polished but never sterile, intricate but always swinging. Drawing on the music of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, they bring real finesse to a catalogue where jazz harmony, R&B pulse and immaculate arrangement all have to sit in exactly the right place.
The set reaches across the great run of 1970s albums, from "Can’t Buy a Thrill" and "Pretzel Logic" to "The Royal Scam", "Aja" and "Gaucho", revisiting songs that have long rewarded listeners who care about craft as much as hooks.
For those who know Steely Dan well, that standard matters. For those coming to the music fresh, this is a very fine way in.
