Uzbekistan, a cradle of culture for more than two millennia, is home to a spellbinding arsenal of architecture and ancient cities, all linked with the bloody, fascinating history of the famed Silk Road. In terms of sights alone, Uzbekistan is Central Asia’s biggest draw and most impressive showstopper. On the other hand, it also boasts incredible scenery, including majestic, snowcapped mountains, home to Amirsoy, a world-class ski resort.
This captivating country offers the best of both worlds, making it a perfect winter break of cultural and ski experiences.
We’ll start our trip by going back in time, to when caravans loaded with silk and spices travelled from China to Europe, through mountain passes and endless deserts. However, we’ll be taking a more modern form of transport between cities – a bullet train!
Bukhara, with its staggering 140+ architectural monuments, is often referred to as a city-museum. Periodically invaded, plundered and terrorized, it eventually became a centre of enlightenment in ancient Turan. Religion and secular sciences such as poetry, astronomy, medicine, mathematics quickly pushed the city’s development and influence. Great scientists and philosophers led their creative lives here and, over the years, various madrasas or shrines were erected for the education of thousands of students.
With its fabulous mosques, madrassas and mausoleums, Samarkand never fails to impress. While human activity in the area dates to the late Palaeolithic era, the city became a famous hub for Islamic scholarly study in the 14th century, and was named the capital of infamous conqueror Tamerlane’s empire. Samarkand’s beautifully preserved Registan Square was the ancient centre of the city, flanked by three monumental religious buildings. The city has also carefully safeguarded the traditions of its ancient crafts, to the extent that in 2001, UNESCO added the city to its World Heritage List as Samarkand – Crossroads of Cultures.
When we’ve had our fill of cultural immersion, just outside of the modern-day capital of Tashkent lies Amirsoy, a world-class ski resort offering the snowy getaway of your dreams. Spread across 900 hectares of picturesque terrain, Amirsoy lies on the northern slopes of Maygashkan mountain, in the western part of the Tien Shan range – just 65 kilometers from the city.
The resort offers all modern comforts and amenities, from a multifunctional ski centre, comfortable chalets and hotels, and a bath and spa complex to a selection of restaurants and bars. During the winter season, skiers and snowboarders have 12 slopes of varying levels of difficulty to choose from, for a total of 15 kilometers of runs.
If skiing isn’t your thing, but you don’t want to miss out, sit back and relax with a hot beverage in your alpine-style chalet – or get a bit more adventurous with tubing and sledging activities, snowmobile rides, or even paragliding, for a bird’s-eye view of the peaks!
For the perfect mix of winter sports and cultural discovery, join us for a Spring Break to remember in this fascinating and friendly country where hospitality is an essential element of daily life.
