Hitchcock’s original icy blonde, the Czech siren Anny Ondra stars in this late-silent era romantic thriller from the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. The director’s final fully silent production, THE MANXMAN is set amidst the wild Isle of Man (although shot along the Cornish coast), making for a sublime, unparalleled atmosphere inspired by German Romanticism and the Gothic. Two childhood compatriots of Manx society take divergent paths in adulthood, with one settling as a fisherman (Carl Brisson), and the other becoming a lawyer (Malcolm Keen). Their lifelong alliance is tested when both fall in love with the daughter (Ondra) of a puritanical pub owner. Embroiled in moody conflict and intrigue, THE MANXMAN is one of Hitchcock’s most complicated and mature silents. Yet, the film’s reception suffered due to its release overlapping with the adoption of sound technologies. Today, it deserves to be appreciated as the masterwork that it is and a film essential for any Hitchcock aficionado.
