The Lincoln Theatre presents the silent Italian film Dante's Inferno (L'Inferno) with a live score featuring Lori Goldston and Corey J. Brewer!Experience Dante's Inferno (L'Inferno) -- a visionary landmark film that shaped the language of cinema from Cecil B. DeMille to David Lynch -- with a live musical score.
Acclaimed cellist and composer Lori Goldston -- who toured with Nirvana and appears on their MTV Unplugged album, and who has collaborated with David Byrne, Cat Power, Terry Riley, Lynn Shelton, and many more -- joins forces with musician Corey J. Brewer, whose score for The Shining Forwards and Backwards helped launch Portland Art Museum's Tomorrow Theater in 2023.
Together they re-imagine Italy's first feature film in a spellbinding performance not to be missed!
Adapted from Inferno, the first canticle of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, Dante's Inferno (L'Inferno) is a spectacle in every sense of the word. For many decades, the film was nearly impossible to view, until recent restorations brought it back to light, combining elements from multiple extant prints. This event uses a 2024 4K restoration.
In the film, the writer Dante (Salvatore Papa) meets Roman poet Virgil (Arturo Pirovano), who guides him through the Nine Circles of Hell -- an allegory for the sins committed by humanity on Earth.
Not only is this the first feature film from Italy, it is also widely considered the first full-length horror film, with incredible sets and special effects that still startle over 110 years later.
