Silent FIlm: Sunrise with Organ Accompaniment
The film was lauded for pushing the boundaries of the purely visual and auditory medium. Released right at the dawn of the “talkies,” Sunrise was the first feature film released using the Fox Movietone sound-on-film system, utilizing a fully synchronized musical score and sound effects, though it featured no spoken dialogue.
Janet Gaynor’s deeply expressive performance (achieved without title cards) won her the very first Academy Award for Best Actress, and the film itself was awarded a special prize for “Unique and Artistic Production” at the 1st Academy Awards.
Organist Jay Spencer accompanies this timeless fable about the duality of human nature.
