The Electric Film Series opens what promises to be a most exciting Season 5 at the Electric Theater on Tuesday, January 21st at 6 PM with a magical trip back to the Silent Film Era;“Rescued by Rover” (1905) (7 min.)
“The Tantalizing Fly” (1919) (4 min.)
“The Freshman” (1925) (77 min.)
—-------------------------------------------
As is always the case when starting a new season of The Electric Film Series, we re-set and go right back to the beginning by way of “Silent Film Night.” For our 2025 opener, however, we’re changing it up ever so slightly. The evening will still include live piano accompaniment (once again, it’ll be the great Matt Szymanski on the keys) but this time, we’ll do one short from the 1900s, one short from the 1910s, and one feature from the 1920s. What films will be screening? That’s a great question and here’s your answer;
1905’s “Rescued by Rover” celebrates its 120th anniversary in 2025. Be part of the celebration as you experience this tale of a loyal (and clever) canine that leads its master to the whereabouts of a kidnapped child.
1919’s “The Tantalizing Fly” is an extremely well-executed blending of live action and animation from Max Fleischer, the brilliant storyteller behind countless “Popeye” and “Superman” animated shorts from the 1940s.
1925’s “The Freshman” stars the iconic and forever gifted silent film star Harold Lloyd as a nerdy college student looking to gain popularity. While Lloyd didn’t quite command the same respect as his brilliant contemporaries Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, there’s no question that he was every bit as vital to the early years of cinema. “The Freshman” celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2025. Be part of that celebration.
Per usual, we at The Electric Film Series aren’t just about the movies themselves. We’re also all about film history and context and as such, with each of these screenings we have a very special guest on hand to introduce the title of the evening and to lead a post-screening discussion. Our special guest speaker for our 2025 Film Series opener is Jason Jackson, the undeniably knowledgeable cinephile behind Southern Utah’s classic film staple, Red Carpet Cinema. This man eats, sleeps, and drinks film, particularly the films of the past, so you can certainly expect plenty of insight on these titles during what promises to be an unforgettable night at the movies.
Be sure to arrive at our screening a little early and order an optional menu item from Riggatti’s to enjoy during the post-screening discussion or, you can feel free to take the pizza home with you following the movie.
The Electric Film Series is free for the community, but donations are greatly encouraged as every cent raised will go towards covering our 2025 Electric Film Series season. When RSVPing for your FREE Electric Film Series tickets, it will now list a "Name Your Own Price" option. You're welcome to put $0 so that the tickets are free of charge but again, we hope you'll consider a donation.
Regardless, thank you for your endless support.
