The Palestinian identity is a stigmatized identity, one constantly reinforced by racist assumptions, and all Palestinians live with a constant threat of being silenced, excluded, defamed and erased. It is what Dr Zahira Jaser calls ‘the manifestation of the Nakba in this country’, which is why it is necessary for those in the solidarity movement to recognize anti Palestinian racism (APR) in all its many forms and call it out.
We are honored to welcome Dr Zahira Jaser from the University of Sussex on 22 February to the White Rock Hotel for this illuminating talk, followed by a Q&A.
Associate Professor Dr Jaser recently published a paper on the key dimensions of APR in societies and organizations and is herself of Palestinian heritage.
After years of not speaking publicly about her identity, the former investment banker decided in 2021, during the intense bombardment of Gaza, that she could no longer remain silent and, in her words, she ‘came out’.
Today she says it is more important than ever to recognize and speak out against this rising tide of discrimination, one that seeks to erase Palestinians, wherever they are.
‘My experience of discrimination comes in spite of the privilege of my white skin, my European accent, my Christian rather than Muslim heritage and my Italian and British citizenship,’ she says.
‘I write this knowing I have a job, stable finances and supportive colleagues. And yet, speaking up as a Palestinian – any Palestinian – is risky.’
Why is the Palestinian identity stigmatized? What forms do discrimination take? What are the consequences of APR for Palestinians and for the rest of society? And what can we do to fight it?
