Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common hemoglobinopathy worldwide with more than 100,000 people affected in the United States and millions globally. Nurses have an opportunity to improve health outcomes and quality of life for patients with SCD, but this is not possible without specialized training.
The two-day Sickle Cell Boot Camp to Promote Nursing Excellence addresses this critical need. This initiative provides an opportunity for registered nurses and advanced practice nurses to gain knowledge and skills in an academic setting with instructors who are education, sickle cell disease, and research specialists.
This effort is a collaboration of the University of Tennessee (UT) Health Science Center College of Nursing, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the International Association of Sickle Cell Nurses and Professional Associates (IASCNAPA).
This program offers a comprehensive, 12-hour, continuing education experience:
• Introduction to Sickle Cell Disease: Pathophysiology
• Living with Sickle Cell Disease
• Sickle Cell Complications: Early Detection and Treatment
• Sickle Cell Disease Scenarios-Group Activities
• Genetic Counseling
• Understanding Acute Chest Syndrome
• Pain, Pathology & Management
• Quality Care from Birth to Transition
• Quality Care for Adults Living with Sickle Cell Disease
The conference will be held at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, TN. All expenses are covered, including attendance fees, meals, overnight accommodations at the Peabody, and convenient valet parking. Participants will enjoy dinner on Monday at the Capriccio Grill.
