From Swordsmanship to Battlefield Applications
Understanding Distance, Timing, and Strategy through Weapons Training
Date: Sunday, 5 July Time: 10:00–15:30
Before the summer holidays begin, we will once again gather for our annual Summer Intensive Training: five hours of focused martial arts practice to tune the body, sharpen the mind, and reconnect with the spirit of traditional martial arts.
This year’s theme is:
From Swordsmanship to Battlefield Applications
In traditional martial arts, weapons are not only tools of combat. They are also teachers. The sword teaches precision and decisiveness. The staff teaches distance, structure, and adaptability. The spear teaches timing, range, and control. By studying how these weapons interact, we gain a deeper understanding of movement, strategy, and martial principles.
This intensive will be fun, educational, and challenging, with a strong focus on practical drills, partner work, and applied martial concepts.
Led by Dr. Bok Kyu Choi — Martial Arts Scholar, Author, and Master of Sibpalki
This Summer Intensive will be conducted by Dr. Bok Kyu Choi, an internationally active martial arts scholar, author, and Master of Sibpalki. With more than thirty years of fulltime dedication to traditional Korean martial arts, Dr. Choi brings together practical training, historical research, and a deep understanding of martial principles.
As Director and Senior Researcher of the Korean Institute for Martial Arts and President of the Dutch Sibpalki Association, he has dedicated his work to preserving, interpreting, and transmitting Korea’s martial heritage. His teaching connects precise technique with practical application, body mechanics, strategy, and martial spirit.
Participants will not only train in swordsmanship and weapon applications, but also gain insight into the deeper logic behind traditional martial arts: distance, timing, structure, adaptability, and the living relationship between body and mind.
Training Schedule
10:00–12:30 — Swordsmanship and Core Drills
The morning session will focus on swordsmanship. We will work on essential footwork, cutting lines, defensive actions, partner drills, and tactical movement.
Topics may include:
- basic cutting and guarding principles
- footwork for attack, retreat, and angle control
- timing and distance in sword drills
- partner exercises for reaction, control, and precision
- practical applications from traditional sword methods
This session will help participants develop better coordination, sharper movement, and a clearer understanding of sword-based combat principles.
12:30–13:00 — Lunch Break
A short break to rest, eat, and recover before the afternoon session.
13:00–15:30 — Staff vs. Spear vs. Sword Applications
The afternoon session will explore the interaction between different weapons: staff, spear, and sword.
This will be the main application-based part of the day. We will examine how each weapon has its own strengths, limitations, and tactical logic.
Topics may include:
- staff against sword
- spear against sword
- sword against longer weapons
- controlling distance and entry
- defending, closing in, and counterattacking
- understanding the advantages and disadvantages of different weapons
- adapting movement and strategy according to range and weapon type
Through these exercises, participants will experience how traditional martial arts principles change depending on distance, weapon structure, and tactical situation.
