About this Event
Step into the world of short-form musical improv in this exciting eight-week course. You'll learn how to create spontaneous, catchy songs and weave them seamlessly into quick, hilarious scenes. With a focus on musicality, comedic timing, and character work, this class will help you build confidence in improvising melodies and lyrics on the fly. Through a series of fun exercises, you'll discover how to transform any suggestion into a musical moment that wows the audience. Whether you're a seasoned performer or new to musical improv, this course will sharpen your skills and unleash your inner performer.
Dates: The class runs Thursdays starting 06/04/2026 and running for 8 weeks. Note that a week may be skipped due to holidays or the Coalition's Second Best Fest comedy festival.
A showcase will be scheduled as an additional opportunity on an evening during the week of August 2nd (or potentially the week of July 27th, pending class availability and holiday scheduling).
Instructors: Preston Bradsher and Jonathan Fuller
Preston Bradsher is an actor, dancer, writer, and improvisor who is obsessed with musical improv and is on a mission to take you with her. She has performed improv and sketch at Coalition on teams including From the Top, Project Jane, Riverboat Stranger, and Legs Akimbo. She is a trained musical theater actor (Interlochen Arts Academy, National Theater Institute) and also performs professionally as an actor in Richmond and elsewhere. When not making up musicals for sport, she can be found sewing, playing the banjo, and solving the kinds of puzzles that annoy normal people.
Jonathan Fuller (he/him) is an improv comedian and musician who has performed with Coalition house teams Silver Child (Harold) and From the Top (long-form musical improv) as well as Indie team Tall Kid Energy. When he's not performing and healing his inner theater kid, he's watching TV or sports, baking, or being an educator, progressive clergyperson, and all around silly goose.
Prerequisites: Improv 101, or equivalent classes at a comparable institution. Email [email protected] with questions.
Cost: $275 (Early Bird: $245)*
*- Hey, why the heck is this price higher than the other classes? This is inclusive of an Accompanist fee, due to the musical nature of the course. Without it, everything would be a capella, and I don't know about you but I got enough of that in college.
