The Outside Foundation was founded in 2014 with a mission to get kids outside and to preserve and protect our local environment. The Foundation seeks to develop, enhance, and expand programs directed at providing opportunities for locals and visitors, of all ages, to explore and develop lasting connections with our waterways and local environment. Their signature program, “Kids in Kayaks”, provides an opportunity for every 7th grade student in Beaufort County to go kayaking and explore the local salt marshes during a regular school day. In 2023, we hosted 1329 students for this remarkably important experience.Over the past ten years, their litter sweeps have engaged thousands of volunteers and removed over 12 tons of trash from our beaches, parks, and other natural spaces. Since 2018, in partnership with the SC Department of Natural Resources, we have captured over 150 tons of shucked oyster shell for use in building 27 new oyster reefs along the shorelines of Hilton Head Island.
