The History of The Shoemaker Museum
Shoemakers Museum is one of Somerset’s most unique heritage attractions, celebrating over 200 years of British shoemaking history and the famous story of the Clarks brand.
Located in the historic village of Street, Somerset, the museum tells the story of how brothers Cyrus and James Clark began making sheepskin slippers in 1825, transforming a small family business into one of Britain’s most recognised footwear companies. Over time, Clarks became world-famous for its footwear, from school shoes to iconic styles such as the Desert Boot and Wallabee.
Originally known as The Shoe Museum, the collection preserved the rich industrial history of Clarks and Somerset’s shoemaking heritage for decades. The original museum closed in 2019, with its collections transferred to the Alfred Gillett Trust before reopening as the new Shoemakers Museum in September 2025 in a beautifully restored heritage setting. The museum now combines a 16th-century manor house, a 17th-century barn, and a modern exhibition space, housing over 100,000 objects including historic shoes, machinery, archives, photographs, and even fossils discovered beneath the old factory floors.
Reported Activity
Like many old buildings in Somerset, stories of strange energy and unexplained experiences surround the museum site. While there are no widely documented major ghost cases, visitors and staff have long spoken about the heavy atmosphere in parts of the older buildings, particularly around the historic factory spaces and the original manor house.
Reports often include feelings of being watched, unexplained footsteps in empty rooms, cold spots, and unusual noises late in the day when the museum is quiet. Given the site’s deep industrial past, generations of workers passed through these buildings, and many believe the emotional energy of the old Clarks factory still lingers.
The museum itself has even embraced its spooky side with seasonal “Ghosts from the Grange” events, featuring ghost-themed trails and Halloween experiences, adding to its reputation as one of the more atmospheric historic museums in Somerset.
With centuries of history, old architecture, and the echoes of thousands of workers who once walked its halls, Shoemakers Museum offers the perfect setting for those interested in haunted museums, paranormal investigations, and ghost hunting in Somerset.
