About this Event
Shirley Chisholm
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 30, 1924, Shirley Chisholm attended Brooklyn College before earning a master’s degree from Columbia University. She made history as the first African American (Caribbean American) woman elected to Congress, where she served from 1969 until 1982. Chisholm's election to Congress and her candidacy for the U.S. Presidency raised the profile of African Americans and women in politics, inspiring generations to pursue political leadership. In 1960, she also established the Unity Democratic Club, a pivotal organization that mobilized Black and Hispanic voters in New York City.
