Step back into Kennebunk’s shipbuilding era and explore the rivers, stories, and people that shaped the town’s early prosperity. Bounded by the Mousam and Kennebunk Rivers, this small village became a thriving hub of maritime industry, with more than 500 ships built along its shores over nearly 150 years. This 90-minute guided driving tour will take you to key locations connected to Kennebunk’s shipbuilding past. Along the way, imagine what daily life was like when the sounds of hammering and sawing filled the air, and learn how abundant forests, local sawmills, and access to waterways fueled the industry.
Discover how shipyards supported the community while connecting it to global trade, and how this era left a lasting mark on the town, from its economy to the beautiful homes of merchants and shipmasters that still line Summer Street today.
