CARAVAGGIO IN ROME... AND AMERICA
Dec 10 | 6p | FIA Theater | FREE Admission
Dr. Lawrence Nichols, Guest Lecturer
In a painting career shorter than two decades, Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio (1571–1610), had a profound impact on the history of Western European art. He rejected the prevailing idealizing style encountered in the paintings of many of his contemporaries, instead meshing a bold naturalism with a theatricality that accentuates the dramatic intensity of his compositions. His works engage the viewer with their meticulous execution and often subtle details, a result of Caravaggio’s at-the- time radical method of painting directly from posed models and objects within his studio, rather than working from preparatory drawings. This lecture by Dr. Lawrence Nichols will consider the painter’s years in Rome, from his arrival there in the early 1590s to his hasty flight from the Eternal City in the spring of 1606 necessitated by the quick tempered, sword-loving painter having killed a longtime adversary. The presentation will also offer a consideration of all works by Caravaggio in America.
Bio: Lawrence W. Nichols is curator emeritus at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA). He received his BA from Dartmouth College and PhD from Columbia University. He is a specialist in northern Baroque painting, and has curated numerous exhibitions at the TMA including The Brilliance of Caravaggio: Four Paintings in Focus, Frans Hals Portraits, A Family Reunion, Manet: Portraying Life, and Van Gogh: Fields. Nichols continues to serve on the Old Master paintings vetting committee of The European Fine Arts Fairs held in Maastricht each March. In addition, he serves on the Art Advisory Panel of the Commissioner of Internal Revenue. He chaired the International Indemnity Program Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts from 2016 to 2020.
