Tiffin-Seneca Public Library is excited to announce Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt as the 2025 Christopher D. English Community Read title. Each year the Community Read encourages people in Seneca County to read the selected title and come together for special events and discussions.
As the featured event in the Community Read, Shelby Van Pelt, a New York Times best-selling author, will speak to the community on Tuesday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Chandelier Community Event Center. The author event is completely free and open to the community and will be followed by a book signing. Copies of Remarkably Bright Creatures will be available for purchase thanks to the Pan Yan Bookstore both at the author event and at the Bookstore leading up to it. Remarkably Bright Creatures is a charming, witty and compulsively readable exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope that traces a widow's unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus. It is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible. Since its debut in May 2022, Remarkably Bright Creatures has become an international sensation, racking up multiple awards and accolades including being a multiple-time New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller, named Best Book of Summer in 2022 by the Chicago Tribune, The View, Southern Living, and USA Today, Amazon’s Best Book of the Year So Far in 2022, Heartland Bestsellers Award in 2023, and more. Additional events accompanying the author visit, including an adult craft night, book discussion, and more will be released in greater detail at a later date.
The Christopher D. English Community Read was recently named in memory of former library trustee Christopher D. English and encourages Seneca County residents to read, think about, and discuss one outstanding title each spring, culminating in the author giving a public presentation in Tiffin. Past speakers have included New York Times best-selling authors Kristin Harmel, Sarah Penner and Michael Hingson, Pulitzer Prize finalist and LA Times columnist Steve Lopez, and international best-selling author Janet Beard. The series is made possible through generous funding by the Tiffin-Seneca Library Foundation and the many donors who have contributed to the Foundation over the years.
