About this Event
An introduction to the city’s footballing heritage through the eyes of its surviving Victorian Buildings, with Steve Wood.
Sheffield has many surviving Victorian buildings that were used by key individuals in the early history of the beautiful game to create clubs, write rules, organise matches, host key meetings, act as business premises or residence for key footballing individuals. Learn about the host works, churches, pubs, or hotels that gave birth to some of our earliest association football clubs and much more.
Come and find out about this hidden history Sheffield has to offer to a sport now followed by 5 billion people globally. You don’t need to be a football fan to enjoy this talk!
Steve Wood is a trustee and historian of the charity Sheffield Home of Football – this is what he says about himself: “My interest in Sheffield’s history, especially its football heritage, goes back to 1974 when aged 11 I moved here from Bolton via Africa. I make football history film documentaries, have co-authored an illustrated children’s Sheffield football history book as well as co-written an academic paper about to be published throwing new light on the evolution of passing in early football. I regularly give talks and lead walking tours about the city’s amazing football heritage.”
Here’s the website if you want to find out more: www.sheffieldhomeoffootball.org
Steve will be selling Sheffield Home of Football merchandise at the end of the evening – payment by card or cash.
