About this Event
She Burns
She Burns is a bold, feminist reimagining of Scotland’s beloved Bard, Robert Burns. Blending live music, storytelling, and wit, this original production summons the spirit of Burns through the voices of four “witches” — Sarah MacGillivray, Lori Flannigan, Eilidh Hughes, and Nicola Alexander — who invite audiences to see the poet’s life and legacy through a fresh lens.
Armed with mics and an acoustic guitar, the cast conjure classic Burns songs and poems with sublime harmonies and evocative arrangements, while exploring the overlooked women who shaped his world — most notably Jean Armour, his confidante, muse, and wife.
Devised by Sarah MacGillivray, She Burns offers a modern, accessible take on Burns’ story, weaving folk tradition with contemporary feminist insight. The musical direction from Nicola Alexander whose arrangements and uplifting harmonies with fellow performers Lori Flannigan and Eilidh Hughes are sublime to listen to, transport you right into the middle of the story.
The result is an intimate, atmospheric hour of song, story, and soul — perfect for Burns devotees and newcomers alike.
