Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Saswati Sen presents a transformative Kathak choreography that captures the different stages of the art form’s evolution and her lifelong relationship with it. As a lifelong practitioner of Kathak, renowned danseuse and Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Saswati Sen has marvelled the forms and evolutions that the Indian Classical dance has gone through – and the many ways it can lend itself to telling stories on stage. Telling stories is exactly what the acclaimed Lucknow gharana exponent does through this set of emotionally rich choreographies, which showcase Kathak’s immense heritage across centuries. And so the flow meanders gracefully – from emoting the divinity in dance as felt in the temples (bhakti) to celebrating the finesse of its age-old techniques (layakari); from the subtle evocative power of expressions as practised in royal court rooms (nazaqat) to Kathak’s strong influence on the silver screen; from the choreographic beauty of the dance form with relation to monsoon to a blend of tradition and contemporary approach (naad gunjan). Each segment mirrors Sen’s deep love for abhinaya (acting through dance), and her journey of weaving it into beautiful performances.
