About this Event
Part of the UCL CIMEC Event Series:
Join us for the third event in our monthly series highlighting interdisciplinary research and collaboration across the UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences.
How to Give a Talk That Gets Results
Our speaker, is a Professor of Medical Education Research at UCL Medical School, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. With a background in psychology and education, she has led research into medical education, workforce inequalities, and the impact of effective communication. She recently completed a two-year secondment to UK Parliament as a Parliamentary Academic Fellow, advising on government healthcare pledges—an experience that reinforced the power of clear, persuasive communication.
Why This Matters
Giving a great talk isn’t just about sharing information, it’s about making an impact. Whether you’re presenting your research, pitching for funding, influencing policymakers, or getting colleagues on board with your ideas, strong communication skills are essential. But what makes a talk effective? How do you engage different audiences, from fellow academics to decision-makers outside your field?
Join Professor Kath Woolf for an insightful session on how to craft and deliver talks that truly connect with your audience. Drawing from her experience as an academic researcher and her work in UK Parliament, Kath will share key lessons on making your message clear, engaging, and persuasive—no matter who’s listening.
What to Expect
- 20-minute Presentation: Kath will explore the essential elements of a great talk—how to structure your message, tailor it to different audiences, and communicate with clarity and confidence.
- 20-minute Q&A: Your opportunity to ask questions and dive deeper into the discussion.
- 20-minute Informal Networking: Meet other attendees, exchange ideas, and grow your network.
Not a natural networker? Don’t worry—we’ll provide a guide to help you connect with ease and will be on hand to support these connections.
