Sharad Purnima holds special significance in the Vaishnav community, as it marks the celebration of divine love and devotion. According to Vaishnav traditions, this auspicious night is closely associated with Lord Krishna's Raas Lila—the mystical dance with the Gopis (cowherd girls) on the banks of the Yamuna River. It is believed that on this night, the moon is at its brightest, and Lord Krishna played the flute, summoning the Gopis for a divine dance symbolizing the soul's union with the Supreme. In many Vaishnav temples and homes, Sharad Purnima is celebrated with great devotion. The night is filled with bhajans (devotional songs), kirtans, and offerings to Lord Krishna. Devotees fast during the day and prepare special sweets like kheer (sweet rice pudding) under the moonlight, as it is believed that the rays of the moon on this night have special healing properties, blessing the food with health and spiritual energy.
The festival emphasizes bhakti (devotion) and the deep spiritual bond between the individual soul (jiva) and Lord Krishna, reminding the Vaishnavs of the eternal love that exists between the devotee and God.
