Shantyshop Barbershants II - the Novocastrian dilemma

BarberShants Returns!
As part of the Newcastle 2026 - Barbershop Harmony Festival, we're once again committing the glorious musical crime of mashing together sea shanties and barbershop harmony for one unforgettable evening.
📍 George Darby Hotel, Newcastle NSW
📅 Tuesday 20 October 2026
🕡 6:30pm until late
FREE - please register. Donations on entry are encouraged but not required.
Expect a room full of friendly singers, curious newcomers, questionable nautical accents, ringing barbershop chords, and enough "AHOY"s to violate several maritime conventions.
On the night you may:
- discover sea shanties and barbershop were secretly separated at birth
- accidentally learn what a dominant 7th is
- sing loud enough to summon ships that haven't existed since 1843
- witness someone explain the Circle of Fifths using a beer coaster
- find yourself harmonising with complete strangers who somehow become old friends in under three minutes
- confidently shout "HEAVE AWAY!" despite having never hauled anything heavier than a shopping trolley
- hear at least one person say "just one more tag..." approximately seventeen times
- leave with a smile that lasts considerably longer than the average pub trivia night
- eat some cheese*
Whether you've sung in choirs for decades or only sing passionately in the car, everyone is welcome. No auditions. No experience required. Just bring your voice, your sense of humour, and a willingness to sing songs that are objectively 37% better when sung in a pub.
