Shame-Sex Attraction: Stories of Survival and Conversion Therapy Book Discussion
Join the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry and PFLAG Charleston for a special Book Club author event featuring Lucas F. W. Wilson, editor of Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors' Stories of Conversion Therapy.
The event will be held on Sunday, August 23rd at 4:00 pm at the We Are Family LGBTQIA+ Community Center, located at 3265 N. Carolina Avenue in North Charleston. You can also join via link remotely (https://pflag-org.zoom.us/j/97788895338)
Lucas Wilson will join us virtually to talk to us about the book and his work, to participate in our discussion and answer questions.
Whether you have read the entire book, read selected stories, or simply want to learn more about the experiences of conversion therapy survivors, you are welcome to attend.
After the discussion, attendees will have an opportunity to continue the conversation informally at Rebel Taqueria.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, SHL has funds available to ensure everyone feels welcome and able to participate. If you would like to participate in dining with us after book club but the cost presents a challenge, please email us at [email protected], and we can discreetly arrange to cover your costs.
About the Author:
Lucas F. W. Wilson, PhD, is a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto Mississauga. His research and public scholarship focus on conversion therapy, religious trauma, and the impact of anti-LGBTQ+ institutions and policies. His writing has appeared in The Advocate, Queerty, LGBTQ Nation, and Religion Dispatches. He is the editor of Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors' Stories of Conversion Therapy and is currently working on additional collections exploring LGBTQ+ experiences in religious and educational settings.
About the Book:
We are survivors.
We were subjected to dehumanizing practices by people who sought our erasure.
We believe telling our stories is both powerful and political.
This edited collection brings together the experiences of those who have been subjected to queer conversion therapy - it is an effort to expose conversion practices for what they are - pseudoscientific, bogus, ineffective, and wildly traumatic - and to recognise and listen to survivors. With contributions from Gregory Elsasser-Chavez, Chaim Levin, Lexie Bean, Syre Klenke, and many more from across the LGBTQ+ spectrum - this is an attempt to ensure that what happened within these pages cannot - and will not - happen to future generations.
