Arts at the Capitol Theater is excited to announce their Student Dance Showcase: Shakti. Performances are January 17 and 18 at 7:00PM, in the David J. Calchara Theater at Arts at the Capitol Theater, located on 896 Main Street in Willimantic Connecticut. Shakti is a Hindu concept that refers to the divine feminine power that is the basis of all existence. Some say that Shakti's energy is inherently healing and can dissolve tensions and outworn beliefs. The show starts with “I…” choreographed by Prudence Canoza (10, Montville), Haley Rivera (11, Willimantic), Jarynelis Rodriguez Luna (10, Willimantic), Marielle Metivier (10, Meriden), and Josmar Hernandez Terrero (12, New London), dancers embody each chakra as they work along with the white light energy dancers. The white light is the ending of instability, when all chakras are balanced, the mind and body are even, and all chakras are aligned.
The dances following move through each of the chakras with the titles “I Understand”, “I See”, “I Talk”, “I Love”, “I Do”, “I Feel” and “I Am”. In Michaela LaFlamme’s (12, Willington) dance, the crown chakra's energy comes to life as a lone dancer embodies an overactive spirit meaning someone who is or may be lacking personal identity and confused, but as the dance progresses, supportive figures gradually join, their movements harmonizing with the solitary dancer, guiding them toward balance and inner peace. Together, they create a powerful portrayal of connection and healing, illustrating how communal support and a sense of belonging.
Caitlyn Kurcinik’s (12, Willimantic) piece focuses on the Anja chakra, showing a struggle with unnecessary thought, and identity struggles. The exploration of the heart chakra is choreographed by Tatyana Winston (12, Lebanon) where the dancer will then walk through the stages of finding a balance despite any obstacles she faces. Juliana Margelony (12, Rockville/Vernon) choreographs for the throat chakra while the Solar Plexus chakra is represented as unbalanced in a dance from Audrey Houk (12, Coventry). Feelings of insecurity and lack of self worth are expressed throughout the dancers’ movement. They find inner confidence and happiness within themselves, yet one dancer becomes overbalanced, with feelings of overconfidence, anger and ego.
Amaree McKnight (11, Willimantic) & Eva Fleming (11, Mansfield) created choreography for the Sacral chakra that is an exploration of overactive, underactive, and learning how to balance. 3 dancers represent overactive, venturing into neurotic, overindulgent, and hypersexual emotions; 3 dancers represent underactive looking into guilt, repressed and stifled feelings. Together all 6 dancers learn how to balance each other and overall feel guilt-free, radiant, and sensual. Najah Wells (12, Norwich) choreographs for a single dancer navigating the energy of the Root chakra and how she is trying to make her way after losing her guidance in life.
The Student Dance Company choreographers are joined by student dancers from the acting and technical theatre pathway: Mirielle Discola (10, Montville), Jehieli Hernandez (10, Willimantic), Ramiyah Johnson (10, Groton), Ofelia Candida-Ochoa (12, Willimantic), Jaeden Prochorchik (12,Willimantic), Aliyah Rosario (10, Manchester), Parker Ruiz (10, Montville), and Alec Soto (10, Willimantic).
