It's the 1950s. Five students live in a strict boarding school. One night they break the rules: sneaking out of their dorm after lights out they discover a banned play 'Romeo and Juliet.' (Why was it banned? Read it sometime - it is FULL of raw sexual innuendo and bawdy language not to mention references to suicide - a big 'No' for religious institutions.) It is also about forbidden love.
Like history's famous star-crossed lovers our five young guys are facing some big challenges in life and as they read the play they start to feel a connection to the story of Romeo and Juliet and for some the story becomes very real.
Joe Calarco's play has won critical acclaim and was awarded an Off-Broadway Lortel as the longest-running adaption of Shakespeare's famous love story in New York history.
'Shakespeare's R&J' is about being young being in love in lust but also what it might mean to be gay.
Given events shaping our world right now its message is as important as it has ever been.
