We're so happy to be joining the Community Education faculty at Garrett College in the 2024-2025 school year for a belly dance workshop course each semester.
Learn the secrets to moving your body like Shakira in this fun-filled, live-music, 2-hour course with the area's best-known dancer-drummer duo, Jensuya & Bob.
We begin the class with learning the foundation of belly dance—the beat and rhythm, which Bob will be playing on the drum. (So don't worry if you think you "have no rhythm" because you'll learn it here!) Then we learn the basic steps and moves of belly dance, how to match those steps and moves to the rhythm, and how to create a simple dance with them. Along the way, we'll learn some key words in Arabic and Turkish and and some of the history of belly dance in North America, from the 1890's dancer known as Little Egypt to Shakira.
Though we love children and do lots of children's programs, this course is best suited to adults and seniors who have a moderate fitness level yet little to no dance or music background—just an eagerness to learn!
Wear stretchy or loose clothing to the class. Go barefoot, or wear flat sandals well-fastened to your feet (no flip flops). For extra fun, don some bling, and tie a sash around your hips, or purchase one of the jingly coin hip scarfs that'll be available at the class.
