IN ENGLISH
A cinematic masterpiece that redefined Ukrainian cinema and gained worldwide acclaim, newly restored in 4K.
This poetic love story unfolds in the Carpathian Mountains, immersing viewers in the traditions, mythology, and culture of the Hutsul people. Directed by the legendary Sergei Parajanov, the film is celebrated for its innovative visual style, vibrant colors, and dynamic camerawork that create a dreamlike, almost hallucinatory experience. Its narrative, based on Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky’s novel from 1911, weaves themes of forbidden love, spiritual connection, collective memory, and the inescapable grip of fate. Despite the fact that the film triggered Parajanov’s persecution by Soviet authorities, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors not only earned global recognition but also marked the birth of Ukrainian Poetic Cinema.
