The concept of Shadow, introduced a century ago by psychologist Carl Jung, refers to the hidden, often suppressed, aspects of our psyche — the parts of ourselves we may have neglected, feared, or rejected. Contemporary Shadow work using the expressive arts incorporates art making, creative writing, embodied practices, and other creative disciplines. It is designed to provide healers and seekers alike with a variety of potent tools for accessing those aspects of Self deemed to be unacceptable. Once identified, understood, and befriended, we are free to incorporate (and even celebrate) these formerly disowned parts. Participating in this process within a mindful community typically leads to enhanced healing and resiliency, cultivating Soul, and enlivening the spirit.
