The ghazal, a poetic form that emerged between the 7th and 10th centuries in the Arabic poetic tradition, began as a lyrical section within longer poems called qasidas, expressing themes of longing, love, and the delicate ache of the human heart. Between the 10th and 13th centuries, Persian poets refined and elevated the form, transforming it into something more philosophical.
As Persian culture travelled to South Asia in the 12th Century, the ghazal found a new home and blossomed alongwith the growth of Urdu literature through the works of poets like Mir Taqi Mir and Mirza Ghalib, becoming one of the most beloved forms of poetic expression in the subcontinent.
Soon ghazals moved beyond the realm of royalty and into the intimate spaces of mehfil and baithak, where poetry met music — blending with Indian classical traditions like thumri and khayal to create the soulful ghazal singing we cherish today.
And what better moment to gather around poetry and music than Eid?
For many of us, Eid arrives with familiar warmth; the fragrance of sheer khurma simmering in the kitchen, plates of sweets and savouries moving from one home to another, and the quiet joy of neighbours, friends, and family exchanging “Eid Mubarak.” It is a festival where doors open, tables grow fuller, and hearts grow lighter through the simple act of sharing.
Inspired by that very spirit, we invite you to an Eid Baithak, an evening of ghazals, conversation, and festive food. Much like the gatherings of old mehfils, this will be a space to sit together, listen, reflect, and celebrate the poetry of longing, love, and life.
Come celebrate togetherness, the beauty of our shared cultural traditions, and the gentle magic of an evening where music, poetry, and food bring people closer.
Come, join the Eid baithak.
Let us remember through story, song, and the warmth of Eid.
