About this Event
Fishing communities across Southeast Asia developed ingenious tools to harvest the sea. In this hands-on workshop, participants learn the traditional craft of weaving a bamboo fish trap (bubu) while discovering how similar fishing devices were used in different coastal regions.
Guided by facilitators from Kebon Dapor, participants will be introduced to the structure and function of fish traps, from funnel entrances to woven bamboo frames designed to guide fish inward while preventing escape. Alongside the weaving session, Pasarfish will present a special show-and-tell of fish traps from different places, sharing stories of fishing traditions, regional variations, and the knowledge passed down through generations of fishermen.
Through craft and storytelling, this workshop invites participants to appreciate how everyday tools embody ingenuity, sustainability, and the lived experiences of maritime communities. It offers a glimpse into the resourcefulness of kampung life, where simple materials from land and sea were transformed into essential tools for survival.
