There is a reason Lembeh Strait is regarded as the best muck diving destination on earth. Everywhere you turn there is a world-class or bucket list critter. Matthew showcases some of these incredible species and provides some tips and tricks on maximizing your photographic time in this remarkable little corner of Indonesia.
Matthew is an underwater and wildlife photographer based in South Florida, USA. Underwater photography is his greatest passion. He aims to create compelling images that can help inspire people towards caring for and appreciating our natural world and all the fantastic creatures we are lucky enough to share space with. Weird, and unusual marine critters are his favorite photo subjects. Matthew has been the recipient of awards including Nature Photographer of the Year (runner up) and most recently first place in the Ocean Portfolio category of the 2025 Ocean Photographer of the Year Awards. His portfolio demonstrates his aptitude and love for portraiture underwater.
“Underwater, I think a portrait is the best way to connect people with whatever your subject happens to be, especially if you have something that has big eyes or you can get double eye contact with or make something that’s not very charismatic in person feel charismatic to the viewer. I like capturing the details and features of faces. You can then layer in other photographic techniques to the pictures to make them more interesting.”
Together with Alex Mustard, Matthew hosts The Underwater Photography Show on YouTube - an invaluable guide for underwater photographers. He is also a photo editor for Dive Photo Guide.
