66 women have been killed so far this year in Australia as victims of gender-based violence, according to Destroy the Joint. For all the progress that has supposedly been made against sexism, women and sexual minorities remain overwhelmingly at greater danger of violence. The threat only grows in the current political climate, with a resurgent and openly sexist and homophobic far-right.Why does sexism and gender-based violence persist even today? Where does it come from, and why does our ruling class seem either powerless or uninterested in stopping it?
