Sew A Skirt / Hakama Pants
About this Event
Build on the foundational machine-sewing skills introduced in Intro to Machine Sewing with a three-week garment-making workshop.
Dates:
Weds, Sept 23, 6:30-8:30pm,
Weds, Sept 30, 6:30-8:30pm AND
Weds, Oct7, 6:30-8:30pm
Description:
Students will create a pleated split-side skirt with pockets, building on the simple straight-stitching skills learned in the introductory workshop while introducing new garment-construction techniques. The skirt is constructed primarily from a series of rectangles, making the pattern approachable while allowing students to focus on developing useful sewing skills.
During the workshop, students will learn how to finish raw fabric edges, create and work with pleats, attach a waistband, construct simple front-and-back waist ties, incorporate pockets, and finish the lower edge of their garment. The finished project is size-flexible and adjustable, making it adaptable to a range of bodies.
To provide a gender-flexible alternative, students may choose to make Hakama-style pants instead of the skirt. The pants follow a similar construction approach, with the addition of a crotch seam, while maintaining the same loosely pleated, flowing construction.
This workshop is designed to build confidence with machine sewing while introducing the additional skills involved in constructing a wearable garment.
Materials:
Students can bring their own fabric (3-4 yards of mid-weight, woven, non-stretch broadcloth) or purchase fabric from the Depot at $7/yard.
Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing machines whenever possible. Working with a familiar machine throughout the workshop gives students an opportunity to continue building comfort and confidence with their own equipment while receiving guidance and support from the instructor. If you need a sewing machine to be provided, please let us know in advance.
