"Poetry is a life-cherishing force."
~Mary Oliver
In this experiential in-person session, John will lead us on a journey that names “seven gifts” of renewal given to us by poetry and poem-making. The intention is to serve as encouragement and as a catalyst for your vocation and your personal journey.
These gifts and this renewal are accessible in the midst of living this life — with its sorrow and joy, travail and adventure, the daily experience of being human and a deeper spiritual current that informs our lives, however we may define that.
Poetry provides a perspective and felt-experience that can be recognized and received as a gift.
The Seven Gifts
* Discovery of meaning and connection.
* A way to sharpen the practice of mindfulness.
* Poetry-as-Healer encourages embodiment.
* Poem-Making invites play and imagination.
* Holding questions - where a question is not in search of an answer.
* Relationships infused with compassion, vulnerability and courage.
* The gift shared with another.
This gathering will include gentle, evocative and poignant writing prompts that will reveal these gifts to us.
No prior experience with poetry is necessary. For everyone - including those experienced with poetry - we invite you to come with a “beginner’s mind!”
Everything is done by invitation. Meaning that you do not have to share if you don’t wish to.

Read more about The Institute for Poetic Medicine below.
The Institute for Poetic Medicine (IPM) was founded in 2005 by poet, author, and educator John Fox, PPM.
His goal was to bring poetry as a healing practice to a wider community. Since then hundreds of poetry circles have gathered, each with an emphasis on creating both a safe and creative circle, participants are guided by experienced Poetic Medicine Facilitators to approach poetry for self-understanding through reading, reflecting, and writing poetry. Sharing within the poetry circle is by invitation and is not necessary or expected.
In addition to poetry circles IPM also offers two options for facilitator training. Our 8-week Peer-Facilitator Training series offers guidance, practice, and feedback for those interested in using the Poetry as a Tool for Wellness series to share poetry circles in their communities. The more in-depth 3-year/3-phase Practitioner of Poetic Medicine training guides students through the process of designing and offering their own poetic medicine programs.
IPM also offers grant opportunities each year for those bringing poetry-as-healer to specific communities free of charge. These are called IPM Poetry Partners.
