From those who own forested property already to those who dream of someday having a forest to call their own and everyone in between, this complete guide will teach you everything you need to know. The first comprehensive resource for Pacific Northwest forest stewards, A Forest of Your Own shares details on how to "read" a forest, sustainable management, wildfire risk reduction, climate change adaptation, ways to enhance wildlife habitat and watershed protection, and much more. In this thorough yet accessible how-to, authors Kirk Hanson and Seth Zuckerman explore all aspects of forest management—everything from how to evaluate a piece of land before you buy it through implementing long-term plans and protecting your forests far into the future. Packed with informative tables, instructive illustrations, and inspiring real-life examples, A Forest of Your Own is the essential handbook to the many rewards of ecological forestry.
As a journalist, SETH ZUCKERMAN reported extensively on forests, salmon, and the human communities that depend on them. He is the executive director of the Northwest Natural Resource Group and author of several books, including Saving Our Ancient Forests and Salmon Nation.
Conversation partner ALEXANDER HARRIS is the policy lead for RE Sources' land use and water protection programs, which includes advocating for ecological forest management in northwest Washington and beyond. Alexander completed a graduate program in Environmental Policy at Western Washington University in 2022, where his research focused on how community-driven forest stewardship can help restore the Nooksack watershed. Having grown up in southern Oregon, Alexander graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Philosophy and Political Science. He has worked for numerous conservation nonprofits on various policy issues ranging from public forest management and wildfire mitigation to ecological forest management and climate mitigation. Alexander and his partner live in the South Fork Nooksack River valley near Acme, where they run Brackenshire Farm, a vegetable and flower farm.
