Hello, all! Hope you've had a good summer. We are getting ready to start our new "season" of play readings at the Bangor Public Library. Our first reading will be Saturday, September 20th in the Crofutt Room on the first floor (bring pillows to pad your chair!).
This year's theme will be "Plays That Inspire" - that is, plays that give us hope for humanity and the triumph of the human spirit. (Thought we could all use that in these times.)
Our September selection:
The Corn is Green
By Emlyn Williams
Via AI: "The Corn Is Green" is a 1938 play by Welsh playwright Emlyn Williams, set in a remote Welsh mining village in the late 19th century. The story follows Miss Moffat, a determined woman who establishes a school for the local miners' children, focusing on the transformative power of education and the importance of finding one's voice. The play explores themes of social class, ambition, and the struggle for self-expression, particularly through the character of Morgan Evans, a young man who benefits from Miss Moffat's efforts.
The original Broadway production starred Ethel Barrymore. There was a film version in 1945 starring Bette Davis, and in 1979 a made-for-TV version starred Katharine Hepburn. Photo is from a recent National Theatre production featuring Nicola Walker.
Hope to see you all there!
