September Meeting with Guest Speaker, Leland Miyawaki
Schedule

UTC-07:00Location
Ballinger Play Field | Mountlake Terrace, WA
Leland’s presentation, “Topwater Fly Fishing for Sea-Run Cutthroat and Coho Salmon,” dives into one of the most thrilling—and visually explosive—ways to fish the salt. He’ll share how his now-famous Miyawaki Beach Popper came to be and walk us through his minimalist approach to triggering surface strikes from sea-runs and coho.
You’ll learn how to fish the tides, read beach structure, and present flies in ways that draw heart-stopping topwater takes. Whether you're a seasoned Sound angler or just beginning to explore our local beaches, Leland’s hard-earned insights will help you fish smarter and with more purpose.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from one of the most respected beach fly fishers in the Pacific Northwest.
Club meetings are free and open to the public. No tickets required. Doors open at 5:30 pm.

ABOUT LELAND MIYAWAKI
Leland Miyawaki is best known as the creator of the Miyawaki Beach Popper, a revolutionary surface fly designed to target sea-run cutthroat and coho salmon in Puget Sound. Inspired by feeding gulls and coho crashing bait on the surface in the late 1970s, Leland developed a pattern that remains a staple for saltwater fly fishers across the Northwest.
Leland currently works part-time as a fly fishing specialist at The Avid Angler in Lake Forest Park. He is also the former Fishing Manager at the Orvis store in Bellevue, where he helped introduce countless anglers to the joys and challenges of fly fishing Puget Sound beaches.
His fishing philosophy emphasizes simplicity, movement, and observation over complexity—an approach that reflects both his fly design and his on-the-water tactics. Over the years, Leland has led beach fishing workshops, participated in conservation forums, and inspired a generation of fly fishers to pursue sea-runs and coho with both skill and stewardship.
Even in retirement, he continues to tie, teach, and advocate for wild fish. His name—and his popper—have become icons of Puget Sound fly fishing.
