September Club Night – Goat Culling on the Galapagos Islands with Jeff Carter
Join us on Thursday 24 September at the Arrowtown Bowling Club for another great NZDASL club night.
This month we’re pleased to welcome Jeff Carter, who will be sharing his experiences from a unique conservation operation involving goat culling on the Galapagos Islands.
For decades, Jeff Carter and Dick Deaker formed one of Fiordland’s most recognisable hunting partnerships — a pilot-shooter duo whose working lives unfolded high above some of New Zealand’s wildest landscapes. Their story wasn’t glamorous, but it was undeniably compelling: two men operating in environments where the margin for error was razor-thin, and success depended on hard work, quick thinking, and complete trust in each other.
Jeff will share stories from his remarkable career, including his experiences culling goats from helicopters on the Galapagos Islands — an archipelago of volcanic islands in the Eastern Pacific, located around the equator, approximately 485 nautical miles west of mainland South America. The operation presented unique challenges, combining remote logistics, conservation goals, and demanding conditions in one of the world’s most distinctive environments.
