Join us at our September book club to discuss Wedding of the Waters: The Erie Canal and the Making of a Great Nation.
In this fascinating book, best-selling author Peter L. Bernstein takes us back to the early days of America, when the colonies on the Atlantic were separated from western settlers by the seemingly insurmountable Appalachian mountain range. Early leaders took on the great undertaking of cutting a manmade waterway through the terrain, a canal that would take travelers 363 miles between Lake Erie and the Hudson River. Bernstein unveils the political and economic challenges in creating the Erie Canal, led by visionaries like Governor DeWitt Clinton, and the long lasting impacts on American society.
Book is available at the Northport-East Northport Public Library.
