On Sep 14th 2025, the Barony of Atenveldt will host a team shoot at the El Oso Archery Range. I am posting these rules for forming teams available now to give our archers time to form teams, strategize, and train.
The theme for this competition is "Teachers and Students." During the Zhou dynasty of China (pre-Roman), Confucius emerged as a teacher that greatly influenced Chinese thought and civilization. He was also an archer and an archery instructor. At that time, archers competed in teams of two, a teacher and a student. These competitions were not just about celebrating individual skill, but also about the transmission of culture and skill, something central to Confucian thought.
In that spirit, this team competition will consist of pairs, and I encourage someone with more experience to work with someone who isn’t as experienced, or a newcomer to archery. The rules for forming teams are as follows:
1. Teams consist of two archers.
2. Teams may optionally compete with a team name.
3. Members of the Order of the Mark and Commanders of the Azure Archers and their scouts may form a pair.
4. Archers ranked Yeoman or higher may form a pair with an archer ranked Bowman and under.
5. For the purpose of forming teams, ranks are determined by the official ranking as of May 19th, 2025. Archers are encouraged to continue training and ranking up before the team competition.
6. Archers may compete with more than one category of bow (handbow or crossbow). For the purpose of team formation, the highest rank in the categories the archer will shoot with will be used for pairing. For example, if you have rank in both handbow and crossbow and intend to use both, then you use the higher rank of the two. If you have rank in both handbow and crossbow but you are only shoot with the crossbow, then you use the rank with the crossbow.
7. Anyone who does not have a partner but wishes to shoot are encouraged to come to the shoot. We’ll find someone for you before starting competition.
If you have any questions about this, please comment here or direct message me and I will do my best to clarify.��To help archers form teams. develop strategize, and train, here are some considerations:
1. We will be shooting at static, clout, and moving targets.
2. Static targets will be at 20 and 30 yards, untimed. Bonuses are pooled for each team. For example, if there is a bonus for landing shots for 3 things on a target, and one archer on a team lands 1 of those things, and the other archer on the team lands the other 2, then the team earns that bonus.
3. The clout target is at 70 yards. For safety reasons, crossbow archers are not allowed to shoot this as a clout shot. However, a small, low target at the 70 yard will be provided and may be shot with direct aim. Scoring for this target is all-or-nothing — full five points for hitting it, or zero for a miss. Handbow archers may shoot at this target as an alternative to clout shooting, but are encourage to shoot the clout target.
4. There will be at least one type, if not two types of moving targets. Moving targets changes their movement dynamic as arrows (but not bolts) can stabilize the moving target. These targets will be timed, with one type of targets having a max of 6 shots. Each team of two will be shooting at the moving target simultaneously. There are several strategies teams can employ.
5. Archers may switch between handbow and crossbow throughout the competition. However, every end must be shot with the same type of bow (handbow or crossbow).��
By request, I can bring out a clout target and/or moving targets to an El Oso practice if archers or teams wants to practice with it.
